McLaren and the tale of two world champions

McLaren pulled off somewhat of a coup luring Jenson Button to the team, I’m not sure what Lewis Hamilton would have thought about that but from a spectators point of view it should make interesting viewing! McLaren don’t have a brilliant history of driver partnerships, though it does tend to move the car forward.

With Jenson Button arriving and Lewis Hamilton staying put we have the last two world champions in the same team. A team that has just bought back the stake held by Mercedes to return to the fold of independent teams. This move will require some restructuring and I’m sure it’s no coincidence that the team Mercedes bought was also the team that Jenson Button moved away from. There will be sparks this season between these two and I expect the battle to be much closer than some people think, I’m not sure there will even be a clear winner.

McLaren developed their car last year more than anyone else, they went from a car that was nowhere to a race winner inside the season. It does mean that they have spent less time on this years car but I’m sure that they’ll say it won’t have been compromised. The car itself looks sleek and slender, I guess it’s the extra length due to the fuel tank. Much like the Ferrari it’s got the long fin along the body, some how it looks slightly prettier though. If it’s not up to scratch they have arguably the best development team on the grid to put it right, it’s just that they might be waving goodbye to championship hopes if that is the case.

It’s an exciting year for McLaren and they have a large billing to live up to, perhaps without the works Mercedes backing they can stop the corporate media handling and let us see what really goes on. We’re going to want to this year.
