Tyres and Qualifying

It seems that there is going to be another new rule for 2010, that the top ten drivers will have to start the race on the same tyres that they qualified in. At first it seems that it will make the race strategy even more different from last year, but will it?

The drivers will more likely use the softer compound for qualifying and therefore want to stop sooner in the race to get rid of them, so we’ll just have the short first stints that we’ve seen in the past. It will be a boon for any car/driver that can keep the harder compound on throughout qualifying though so perhaps we’ll see more upsets.

This rule sounds like an odd addition but I guess it’s all about trying to spice up the action and I can see how this would put drivers out of position if they go for race day strategy over pole. Is that a good thing or is that exactly what the new refuelling rules were trying to do away with? It’s also another confusion for the lay spectator who won’t care about what tyres they used yesterday and why their favourite driver can’t use the best rubber available to him come race day.

All in all quite a pointless rule but one that is almost certain to cause upset at some point in the season.
