How can Stefan GP get on the grid? US F1 remains their only target

With the takeover of Campos Meta confirmed and Virgin and Lotus already on track it seems that US F1 are the only team that Stefan GP could replace to make the 2010 grid. With Campos out of the way the rumour mill has started on US F1 it’s finances and it’s potential to make the grid.

Stefan GP have yet to show that they are actually a viable team, their car is yet to run much like Campos Meta and US F1 but Zoran Stefanović has been making big noises about the fact that they are ready and have the car – which to be fair they are testing near the end of the month. That is more than the other two teams have managed yet.

Neither Campos nor US F1 have been very open during the whole build up to the start of the season, with Virgin and Lotus giving interviews and giving press updates plus some pictures on the websites Campos Meta and US F1 have hardly had any exposure. It seems that they may have been struggling for a while in silence.

If Stefan GP are to make the grid it will be because of a failure to find F1 support stateside, an arena that F1 does spectacularly well to alienate. ‘That’ GP at Indianapolis was just the pinnacle of another failure for F1 in the US, it seems that even having their own team with all the money that is the in US is still just too much of a stretch.

With any luck the US F1 will make the grid and the FIA will allow Stefan GP to compete anyway, it’s unlikely that any extra grid places will be anything but last minute as the FIA won’t want to give two new grid spots out to see one of the other teams fail before the first race and then have to start another process to fill the newly created spots. It seems we’ll have to wait until the last minute again before everything is clear.
