More changes to the points system

So it seems like the points structure has changed again, before the other one was even implemented, I’d like to say that they’ve abandoned the crazy 25 points for a win but no. In some ways it’s madder.

The new points system that was agreed with the FIA yesterday is 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1, this increases the gap between a win and second place to 7 points, decreases the gaps for the mid places and makes the last two places points for finishing. This is changed from the 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1 system that was agreed a couple of months ago.

All my original points about the historical comparisons aside this system does reward the win more, lets hope that no team orders come up though. Perhaps though it will make the driver in second place go after the win more it also means that it’s more likely you’ll settle for third and not risk it for three points when you’ve already got 15 in the bag. Last year you would stand to lose 6 points and gain two – a third more, this year you’ll stand to get 3 more points but risk the loss of 15 – only a fifth extra, it seems a long way from 10-6-4-3-2-1.

The mid places 4-8 will now get 12-10-8-6-4 which will make it hard for the mid level teams to pull away from each other, but then I guess that’s what we want, close battles throughout the field. Only once we’ve started using this system will we see if it’s working but it’s a bit of a risk.
