Nick Heidfeld moves to Mercedes reserve role

So without a home for 2010 Nick Heidfeld has given up hope of a race drive for 2010 and taken up the reserve driver role at Mercedes. I guess it is his best hope for a few races with a decent team.

With nowhere to go after Sauber signed Pedro de la Rosa he has settled for the reserve driver role, it’ll mean that he’s testing a good car and that he’s still in the F1 paddock at least but I’m not so sure he wouldn’t have been better off joining one of the new teams to keep himself on the track. I’m sure Campos would have jumped at the chance of having someone of his calibre driving for them. Having said that, they probably wouldn’t have paid him and it’s not like he’d have been competitive. At least he’d be there though.

With rumours circulating that Michael Schumacher doctors were about for his testing he might just get a few drives at Mercedes if Schumacher’s neck can’t cope with the whole season. It’s a long shot but it might just pay off, then he’d be in a decent car too.

From Mercedes perspective it rounds off team Germany with three German drivers on their books, with team England now at McLaren perhaps it’s all turning into A1 GP.
