Can Alonso make his 2010 dream a reality?
Fernando Alonso has managed to keep a reputation for being one of if not the best all round driver on the F1 grid over that last few years even though he hasn’t managed to bring home much recently. His year at McLaren has all but been forgotten and he is seen as the person who’s been making Renault look ok for the last couple of years – he is now at Ferrari and he expects that to change.
With the return of Michael Schumacher and both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button at McLaren he still remains the favourite to take the title this season and I think there is good reason for this. As much as I like Massa I can’t see him beating Alonso this year, and at Ferrari that means Alonso is going to be number one. He’s also going to have a good car, the 2009 Ferrari wasn’t good and the team have spent longer than almost everyone else on their 2010 challenger – so I expect it to be good, capable of winning at the very least. Alonso has proven that in a machine that is capable of winning he’ll do just that.
Ferrari also have the resources to keep the charge going all season and keep the reliability good which is going to be key this year with the points system as it is, a DNF is very bad news. If they can couple a car that can win with Alonso’s talent to win into a regular package we could see Alonso’s third title in short order.

Ferrari F10 looks really strong. It is quick and reliable. Since 1997, Ferrari has either won the drivers world championship or fought for it until the last race with only two exceptions – 2005 and 2009. It seems that this year we will again see Ferrari at least fighting for the title until the end. And Alonso is not only one of the very best drivers on the grid; I believe that he has also learned from mistakes he did in the past.
Massa will undoubtedly challenge Alonso but I also cannot imagine Felipe beating Fernando. Of course, Felipe has matured as a driver and the crash in Hungary probably made him even stronger. It may sound strange but remember that Michael Schumacher won most of his titles after he had recovered from the leg injury in Silverstone 1999. However, I will be surprised if Massa manages to collect significantly more points than Alonso until the last races of the season.
If both Ferrari drivers, however, will turn out to be approximately on the same level and will have similar amount of points before the last couple of races, then it might be a disadvantage for Ferrari as a team as it is possible that other teams will each have a clear number one (Schumacher, Vettel & Hamilton?) by then.
I’m not so sure that the other teams will have such a clear leader, Rosberg will be pushing Schumacher hard, Webber has his top flight F1 seat to keep this year and Button is going to be no push over at McLaren.
However if Massa and Alonso do manage to keep a fight going all season ahead of the others with roughly even scores then I think the new points system is going to ensure that the others don’t get near them.
