Button calls the tyres and does it again
Jenson Button became the first driver in 2010 to win for a second time as he beat Lewis Hamilton home for a McLaren 1-2. Button stayed near the sharp end at the start and then stayed out on slicks when most of the other top drivers pitted for intermediates, this put him out front with Nico Rosberg, as Rosberg started to struggle Button closed up and took the lead he wouldn’t surrender for the rest of the race. As the drivers on inters started to put the times in that would catch the leaders their tyres went and they had to pit again and so those at the front enjoyed about a 50s lead.
With the race order set for a while those who had stopped started to carve their way through the middle order, Lewis Hamilton showed his skill at overtaking during this phase and by the time the second round of stops came along they were catching the leaders but they were around 40s behind. With everyone stopped a safety car period closed all of the field up and then gave Hamilton and Alonso the shot at the podium, without the safety car they wouldn’t have been able to get there.
Schumacher didn’t really get going again and was clearly struggling with the car in a way that Nico Rosberg wasn’t, the middle order teams didn’t really get a look in as the big teams all finished, Renault seem to have taken the position as the best of the rest with both cars taking points.
It was a good weekend for the HRT cars as they both managed to finished the race and have managed to close the gap to the other new teams significantly. Lotus had a mixed weekend, though they managed to finish above a more established team with Heikki Kovalainen, Trulli’s car suffered another hydraulic failure. Virgin had another bad weekend with both cars retiring. Sauber also had another terrible weekend with two more DNFs.
