Red Bull look unstoppable in the streets of Monaco
Red Bull provided the text book display of how to go about winning an F1 race, the only thing that they didn’t manage to get right was both cars on the front of the grid. Mark Webber was in a class of his own for the entire race and it seemed that he had plenty of extra pace in the bag if the others started to push him. It seems that the championship this year may very well be between the two Red Bull drivers as their car looks unbeatable.
Fernando Alonso put on a rather impressive display of driving to go from the back of the grid to take 6th place and ensure limit the damage caused by his off in free practice on Saturday although I wonder what he could have done had he started from the front, yes he was helped by the safety cars but then he also drove the wheels of the Ferrari to get it round that fast when he could and to get past the slower cars.
Not much can be said for Jenson Button’s race, McLaren shot themselves in the foot by leaving a bung in the sidepod on the way to the grid and effectively cooked the engine which promptly expired shortly into the race. How they managed such a feat is beyond me – I’ve certainly never seen it before and it seems like such a fundamental mistake to make – not even the new teams have managed that so far. Couple that with the tyre call on Saturday and you wonder what Button’s weekend could have been like.
The new teams still seem to be struggling for pace and I wonder how much longer they can keep this up? They are simply nowhere near the other guys, it not only defeats the point of the first part of qualifying but doesn’t really improve the show. Looking at the Virgins whilst Alonso was following they seemed to be struggling for fundamental grip, come on guys we want to see 24 cars at the races not 18.
A team that do deserve some credit is Renault, I’d written them off but they have come up with an impressive car that in the hands of Kubica has humbled Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes at a fraction of their budgets. If only they had hired a second driver.
