Rubens Barrichello

Rubens Barrichello has been a feature of the F1 grid for many years now, he’s a great guy and has enjoyed a good amount of success even if he’s never reached the heights of World Champion which I’m sure remains his aim. At Williams he’s going to have the chance to put in the occasional good performance but I’m pretty sure the car isn’t world title material – his job will be to see if his input can make Williams a force again.

Last season was Rubens’ best chance so far of the title and if he’d started the season with a few more points he could have made it to the finish but it was not to be and a few problems scuppered his dream. He did however win races again and take more podiums, so it wasn’t like he went home empty handed.

I’m surprised to see him at Williams this year and not at one of the new teams, the type and level of experience and knowledge a guy like Barrichello could bring to the new outfits is immense and could help them develop the car and the team much faster than with rookie drivers. I guess that would mean that they would have to pay him and convince him that the car could be something and that he’d still be driving it when it was something.

With 17 seasons in F1 and 6 of them with Ferrari he is the most experienced guy out there, is 2010 his last? I hope not as he’s the type of honest driver that we need in F1 and a lot of the grid would do well to look at Rubens a little closer.
