Can Jenson Button retain the title this year?

Arguably Jenson Button has the least chance of retaining his world title since Jacques Villeneuve pulled on his Williams helmet in 1998. With Ferrari signing Alonso and Mercedes bringing back Michael Schumacher plus the fact that Lewis Hamilton is now Jenson Button’s team mate there will be much more competition this year for the top set of points, and I haven’t even mentioned the Red Bull team.
Jenson Button will first and foremost have to beat his team mate to win the title and that is going to be a tough ask, he’ll have to do better than Fernando Alonso did in 2007, Hamilton has improved since then too. Button moves to McLaren as the World Champion as Alonso did in in 2007 but he’s also British and Hamilton did alienate a portion of the McLaren team last year after his antics in Australia so Button’s in a stronger position. What [...]

Retirements in 2009 and what that means for 2010

In 2009 there were 68 retirements from the races, that doesn’t seem very many considering what the sport was like only a few years ago. Even better when you see that 22 were accidents, 12 were spins, 1 was Hamiltons disqualification, 1 ran of of fuel and 1 withdrew. That leaves 31 mechanical retirements for the whole season, less than two a race.
What does this mean for 2010, bluntly that the drivers should be more careful. With so many rookies in the field this I’d expect accidents and spins to get worse not better this year but the established drivers should take note of these things. The cars are reliable and the drivers are now the weak link.
From these stats it seems that the engine homologation has at least done one thing, made the engines reliable. With only two failures last year and the engines running for two races it’s [...]

What can Alonso expect in 2010?

Fernando Alonso moves from his Renault safe house to Ferrari this season and arrives finding it a little different to when he signed for the them a year or so ago. 2009 wasn’t kind to Ferrari and Alonso must be hoping that changes this year.
Partnering the Brazilian Felipe Massa who is quick and has pushed all his team mates hard Alonso won’t be left to relax. Massa had been building himself up to be the number 1 at the Italian team over the last couple years with losing out by just a point to Lewis Hamilton in 2008 and having the upper hand over Kimi Raikkonen until his accident last year. So Massa will want to come back strong and assert himself as much as Alonso wants to do the same at his new team.
Alonso will also have to content with all the other drivers on the track, Ferrari are [...]

Ferrari – a return to form

For Ferrari 2010 is important, it will show whether the team can lose the key players that were a success and still be a driving force in F1. They will be under immense pressure to deliver at the very least multiple race victories to the tifosi, today they unveil the car that will in all likelihood help them do it.
The driver lineup looks like one of the best on the grid, they have Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. There may be question marks over how Felipe Massa can come back from injury but I honestly think they are overstated, Felipe Massa wouldn’t be back driving if he wasn’t his best. It will be interesting to see what an influence Michael Schumacher had at Ferrari with regard to Massa and how he copes without this and how he deals with Alonso. Fernando Alonso needs no introduction and has shown over the [...]
