Mercedes bought the Brawn team and convinced Michael Schumacher to return to F1 but have achieved little else. They have been the fourth best team on the grid for most of the season and they’ll be disappointed by that. Ross Brawn will be pushing hard to improve things for next year but it remains to be seen whether they can build something that can challenge the other teams. They seem to have got bogged down in the midfield to many times this year, whether that is because the car is hard to use in passing or whether it is just a lack of pace we’ll never know.
Nico Rosberg has had an impressive season, he has continually bettered Michael Schumacher and has impressed the team. That said he hasn’t set the world on fire, but that could be the car too. He needs to beat Schumacher in 2011 too if [...]

2010 sees the most changed grid in a long while and whereas the new teams and drivers receive a lot of press there are also a good few drivers who’ve changed teams over the winter. Some of them for the better and some for worse.

Jenson Button – Brawn to McLaren
Rubens Barrichello – Brawn to Williams
Nico Rosberg – Williams to Mercedes
Fernando Alonso – Renault to Ferrari
Timo Glock – Toyota to Virgin
Jarno Trulli – Toyota to Lotus
Heikki Kovalainen – McLaren to Lotus
Robert Kubica – BMW Sauber to Renault

Some of the moves were forced such as Timo Glock, Jarno Trulli and to some extent Robert Kubica because of the demise of the team though in Kubica’s case Sauber re-emerged later on. Glocks move sees him end up at Virgin and Trulli’s at Lotus – two of the new teams – only time will tell whether these moves make sense and a lot of [...]

When it was announced that the FIA would be looking for new teams to bolster the F1 grid I was surprised – isn’t this a club where you have to know Bernie and have had dinner with him a few times plus have filled his pockets with gold before you can fill in the form? But no, they were indeed opening up F1, and they had a lot of applications.
The FIA (and Bernie) should have looked at the applications that were tabled and then thrown away the financially unsound ones and then looked at what was left, there was a lot of talk about due diligence at the time. This process was obviously not through enough, two of the teams that were granted entry have been sold and bought before the new season has even started (Campos Meta and Manor), and a third is rumoured to have mounting financial problems [...]

With Michael Schumacher absent from the test another former world champion in the form of Lewis Hamilton took to the track in his first laps of the McLaren, he fared better than Gary Paffett by getting the McLaren ahead of the Mercedes but didn’t impress on the Ferrari dominance of the test so far, or the Sauber’s second place.
Sauber seem to have amazing pace considering what has happened to them over the last few months, perhaps we are going to see another Brawn moment? And it was the inexperienced Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi at the wheel today so it seems it’s not all down to a testers handiwork – I have to admit I’m already becoming a fan.
The Ferrari is continuing to impress with it’s form and it seems that there are rumours of more downforce from a b-spec diffuser that is being rushed through development at the factory, who knows [...]

Mercedes finally took the wraps of their first works car for years at the start of the Valencia test. It sports the colour scheme that was on the car for the team launch but was unveiled to much less fanfare at the test and has already completed it’s first shake down.
The testing duties on the first day fall to both Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher though Rosberg drove the car initially. I guess getting an up to date driver to take the car out first makes sense though it surprises me that Schumacher wasn’t behind the wheel – perhaps things are more equal at Mercedes than we give them credit for.
With only Red Bull absent from the test we should see some comparative times even if they don’t mean a lot, we’ll see if some are really struggling with the new cars at least, remember the Brawn always looked quick [...]

Peter Sauber’s team unveiled their new car yesterday and though it got little press I think it’s a more exciting proposition than the Renault one. Peter Sauber describes himself as a reluctant owner but he’s always put in the effort with F1 and sold BMW a pretty handy team.
The new car looks kind of bare without any of the customary sponsorship but then the Brawn looked like that last year, it sports a higher nose than some of the other cars but retains the long fin of the McLaren. I will watch with keen interest how Sauber do this year though barring a huge surprise I don’t expect much from them really.
With Kamui Kobayashi and Pedro de la Rosa driving for them this season they really do have the experience and the excitement though I’m not sure how de la Rosa got the nod ahead of Nick Heidfeld but [...]

Red Bull finished the 2009 season with the best car, even the guys at Brawn would have said that. They were consistently fast, have great drivers and had the drive and capacity to follow this through all season and if they had designed a double diffuser into the car they probably would have won at least the constructors championship. So what should we expect in 2010?
The team hasn’t had any major changes, with both drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel staying put - why would they want to move?! Mark Webber should be on form from the start this year after his leg injury and will be wanting to reassert himself over his young team mate Vettel. Vettel has another rival on the scene now for top german and another for most promising young german in the forms of Michael Schumacher and Nico Hulkenberg, I don’t think he get lost [...]

For Ferrari 2010 is important, it will show whether the team can lose the key players that were a success and still be a driving force in F1. They will be under immense pressure to deliver at the very least multiple race victories to the tifosi, today they unveil the car that will in all likelihood help them do it.
The driver lineup looks like one of the best on the grid, they have Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. There may be question marks over how Felipe Massa can come back from injury but I honestly think they are overstated, Felipe Massa wouldn’t be back driving if he wasn’t his best. It will be interesting to see what an influence Michael Schumacher had at Ferrari with regard to Massa and how he copes without this and how he deals with Alonso. Fernando Alonso needs no introduction and has shown over the [...]

Mercedes officially launched their new F1 team yesterday in Stuttgart, unveiling the silver – we all knew it was going to be silver right? – livery and Michael Schumacher in Mercedes attire, oh and Nico Rosberg. Apparently they are going to have equal standing in the team.
It seems from the pictures of the launch that all trace of the Brawn boys are gone, replaced by the corporate feel of Mercedes, I wonder whether McLaren will go the opposite way now? The image of Michael Schumacher is more striking I think not for the man himself but for the lack of red, I haven’t seen an image of him for about 10 years without him being adorned with Ferrari motives, he looks younger again, perhaps with a new challenge we may see one hell of a return.
Mercedes will unfortunately start next year with what I think will [...]
