McLaren falter and Red Bull charge onwards in Japan

With the five title contenders only 25pts or a race win apart the championship looked incredibly close going into the race. Vettel’s victory and the failure of either McLaren driver to even look like they could get on the podium unless one of the other guys has a problem means that the championship looks less open going to Korea.
If Red Bull don’t have an issue at the next race, and I probably mean a double DNF here then the McLaren guys are out of the title race now, Alonso is still in there but it’s looking more and more like Red Bull have this year in the bag.
Kobayashi had a fantastic race for Sauber and was the only man to really drive past people, if the tactical guys at Sauber had got their act together then he may well have finished further up the field than he did. If more [...]

Button calls the tyres and does it again

Jenson Button became the first driver in 2010 to win for a second time as he beat Lewis Hamilton home for a McLaren 1-2. Button stayed near the sharp end at the start and then stayed out on slicks when most of the other top drivers pitted for intermediates, this put him out front with Nico Rosberg, as Rosberg started to struggle Button closed up and took the lead he wouldn’t surrender for the rest of the race. As the drivers on inters started to put the times in that would catch the leaders their tyres went and they had to pit again and so those at the front enjoyed about a 50s lead.
With the race order set for a while those who had stopped started to carve their way through the middle order, Lewis Hamilton showed his skill at overtaking during this phase and by the time the second [...]

Can Sebastien Vettel go one step further this season?

Sebastien Vettel stormed his way to second place in the World Championship in 2009 and he’ll want to go one step futher in 2010. The competition this season will be stronger for sure, McLaren and Ferrari won’t be off the pace and Mercedes will be in close company too so he’ll have to perform better than last year.
Red Bull seem quietly confident about their car, it has done well in winter testing but rarely did it grab the headline times – it did run faster more consistently than some though. It seems that they won’t miss out on any technical oversights like last year with the double diffuser – they would probably be world champions if they had used one from the first race in 2009.
To beat Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher to the title Vettel needs to start the season with the same raw [...]

Can Alonso make his 2010 dream a reality?

Fernando Alonso has managed to keep a reputation for being one of if not the best all round driver on the F1 grid over that last few years even though he hasn’t managed to bring home much recently. His year at McLaren has all but been forgotten and he is seen as the person who’s been making Renault look ok for the last couple of years – he is now at Ferrari and he expects that to change.
With the return of Michael Schumacher and both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button at McLaren he still remains the favourite to take the title this season and I think there is good reason for this. As much as I like Massa I can’t see him beating Alonso this year, and at Ferrari that means Alonso is going to be number one.  He’s also going to have a good car, the 2009 Ferrari wasn’t [...]
