With Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and Sebastien Vettel filling the top five on almost everyone’s odds what chances to the others have? Here we’re talking about Nico Rosberg, Felipe Massa and Mark Webber mainly as I don’t think that any of the other teams could pull the championship off.
Nico Rosberg doesn’t have much hope of securing the championship even if the Mercedes ends up being the dominant car because of his team mate, Michael Schumacher will not let Rosberg beat him – whatever the team say. To be in a position to take the title he’d have to be head and shoulders above Schumacher and the only way I can see that happening is if Mercedes win almost everything with honours even between the two drivers and Schumacher has a couple of DNFs in the last few races. With the apparent strength of Ferrari, McLaren and [...]

When we look at the full four days of the testing in Barcelona the picture is much the same as the last day of the test. Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber and Felipe Massa take the top spots again showing the form of these teams.
In this list Mercedes GP look of the ultimate pace taking 6th spot behind Force India and Williams but as the first seven places are separated by less than half a second perhaps the story that it tells is that this season will be very close. In this list the new teams seem to have a lot of work to do, they are five seconds adrift.
The odd teams are Toro Rosso and Renault, they seem to be off the pace of the others even if they have managed to impressive on particular days, the Toro Rosso was also fast at Jerez so perhaps it’s just the [...]

The last couple of seasons have been cosy at McLaren for Lewis Hamilton, once Alonso left the team at the end of the 2007 season he’s been partnered with Heikki Kovalainen who he’s comfortably beaten. Jenson Button on the other hand has been in a team with Rubens Barrichello who is no push over. Now they are teamed up together.
Jenson Button is moving to the team so that instantly puts him as some disadvantage but he’s moved teams before and he is the current world champion so there can be no institutional favouritism, openly anyway. He’s also gone into the team knowing past form and his personal team will be trying to ensure that everything happens as he wants it to. I did hear somewhere that he’d forced some sort of management restructure at the team to ensure there would be no favouritism. If so that says two things – [...]

Lewis Hamilton’s time on the last day of the Jerez test was the fastest of the four days and sets McLaren at the top of the timesheets, but Jaime Alguersuari’s Friday time netted Toro Rosso the second spot. Taking the best times from all four days makes for a much better comparison of the times than the day by day listings, the full listings are below.
As far as the teams go McLaren take the top spot but it’s teams that are associated with the middle pack that take the next set of places leaving Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari out in the cold. Marks must go the Toro Rosso and Sauber for keeping up those times and topping a day each too.
1. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren, 1:19.583
2. Jaime Alguersuari, Toro Rosso, 1:19.919
3. Kamui Kobayashi, BMW Sauber, 1:19.950
4. Adrian Sutil, Force India, 1:20.180
5. Rubens Barrichello, Williams, 1:20.341
6. Robert Kubica, Renault, 1:20.358, 86 [...]

With Michael Schumacher absent from the test another former world champion in the form of Lewis Hamilton took to the track in his first laps of the McLaren, he fared better than Gary Paffett by getting the McLaren ahead of the Mercedes but didn’t impress on the Ferrari dominance of the test so far, or the Sauber’s second place.
Sauber seem to have amazing pace considering what has happened to them over the last few months, perhaps we are going to see another Brawn moment? And it was the inexperienced Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi at the wheel today so it seems it’s not all down to a testers handiwork – I have to admit I’m already becoming a fan.
The Ferrari is continuing to impress with it’s form and it seems that there are rumours of more downforce from a b-spec diffuser that is being rushed through development at the factory, who knows [...]
