Virgin pass on most of the testing for the second day

Virgin Racing have made it to the second test of the season but must be hugely frustrated at only having completed a handful of laps over the two days and still being wildly off the pace.
Being 8 seconds adrift is an age in F1 and if it’s because of the weather and the limited running then that is understandable but I fear it could be more deep routed than that. It’d be interesting to compare the Force India’s or the Renault’s first few laps to those times though to be sure.
It seems that their engineering standards aren’t as high as they need to be for F1 at the moment either with the front wing coming off the car during it’s first run in the morning. The team say that the cause has been identified and with the parts that they should be getting overnight then we should see more of [...]

Testing times in Jerez, they really are…

Todays test in Jerez involved all of the current F1 teams along with the first new team to show it’s colours – Virgin Racing. With last weeks test throwing up some surprises we’d expect this weeks one to be even more exciting.
The test didn’t disappoint – apart from the weather – there’s not that much comparison to do between the times as all the cars would have been trying out different setups and tyres to see where the wet/inter cut off is but seeing a Mercedes with Nico Rosberg firmly at the top might be a little ominous. Fernando Alonso would have been disappointed not to be faster and Sauber with Kamui Kobayashi stayed just below the Ferrari it’s just that time that meant fifth place.
McLaren and Jenson Button still don’t seem to be able to get it together with the sixth fastest time but Sebastien Buemi (Toro Rosso) and [...]

No more wheel spinners, another new 2010 F1 rule

Another of the new rules for 2010 is that the teams can’t use the spinners that became popular in the last couple of years. These used to smooth the airflow over the wheels and ensure they caused minimal turbulence and drag. It also used to improve rear downforce and cooling.
These little gadgets had many benefits to the teams so it’s hard to see that they would have abandoned them without a fight but then the whole Alonso debacle where the spinner wasn’t fitted correctly and eventually tore the wheel free may have softened them up on that one. With the teams fighting for every inch I’ll be interested to see what the teams can do to claw back the positive sides to these devices.
It does mean that pit stops will really all be about getting the tyres on and off this year, there’s no room for any mistakes. I seem to [...]

What’s happening at Campos Meta, will they reach Bahrain?

Since the announcement that 4 new teams would be entering F1 there has been rumours circulating around all the new teams but none more so than Campos Meta. They have shown the least to the world and even Bernie has been voicing the rumours.
Over the last few weeks it’s become clear that Adrian Campos hasn’t got the financial support to go racing for a year without new Investment in the team, he says that he doesn’t want to sell a stake but that he wants investment… Now as someone who works for a VC backed company I’m not sure how he’s going to get investment without selling part of the team, that’s how it works isn’t it?
Anyway Adrian Campos has said that he will have the required funding in place on Monday and that the team will line up on the grid in Bahrain – even if that is without [...]
