McLaren’s rear wing and the prospect of provisional results

The rear wing of the the McLaren – or rather the mechanism that can affect the effectiveness of the rear wing at high speed on the McLaren has been questioned by the other teams ahead of Sundays race. The stewards have passed it as legal and the FIA have backed them up on this, but with the propect that one of the other teams could appeal or lodge a protest then the race result may end up being provisional.
The issue centres around the device on the McLaren which allows the driver to change the airflow over the rear wing. Normally the device will be shut and won’t effect the airflow at all but at high speed the driver can open the flap which will then let the air pass through the chassis and exit over the rear wing which has the effect of stalling it, reducing drag and therefore increasing [...]

US F1 out, Stefan GP out – the FIA publish the revised 2010 entry list

The FIA have issued the revised entry list for the 2010 season that confirms neither US F1 or Stefan GP will be at Bahrain. The release basically denies Stefan GP entry as it says
it is not possible for a replacement team to be entered for the championship at this late stage
I guess their dream was good while it lasted. It all comes down to whether they could have raced I guess and the FIA didn’t think they could. It remains to be seen whether Campos Meta under the new title of HRT Cosworth will manage to make the grid as no one has seen the car – it is due to be launched soon though.
Other things worth noting from the list are the lack of a second driver for HRT to partner Bruno Senna and the fact that Campos Meta can rename the team but that BMW Sauber Ferrari [...]

US F1 bite the bullet and try to defer their entry until 2011

US F1 have finally held up their hands and said that they’re not going to make Bahrain, they might next year though and so have applied to the FIA to have their entry deferred for a year. What on earth are they playing at? I think that the whole saga should just be put to bed now – you failed.
Why should US F1 get the leeway to have another year to make the grid? I think that it does depend on how the FIA deal with the last slot on the grid, they should give it to Stefan GP if they can make it in time and then give US F1 a backup slot for next year. If the FIA are serious on the number of teams on the grid then they can’t give US F1 a guaranteed slot for next year.
What will happen if they turn down the request? [...]

How the FIA failed entirely in expanding the grid

When it was announced that the FIA would be looking for new teams to bolster the F1 grid I was surprised – isn’t this a club where you have to know Bernie and have had dinner with him a few times plus have filled his pockets with gold before you can fill in the form? But no, they were indeed opening up F1, and they had a lot of applications.
The FIA (and Bernie) should have looked at the applications that were tabled and then thrown away the financially unsound ones and then looked at what was left, there was a lot of talk about due diligence  at the time. This process was obviously not through enough, two of the teams that were granted entry have been sold and bought before the new season has even started (Campos Meta and Manor), and a third is rumoured to have mounting financial problems [...]
