The Malaysian GP was full of overtaking, pit stops, accidents, etc… but is was serene for Vettel at the front as he waltzed off to his second victory and a 24pt lead in the championship. Jenson Button who described his own race as “confusing” finished up in second as he put his McLaren where it needed to be and kept hold of his tyres for long enough to make it stick. Heidfeld confirmed the pace of the Renault as he took the last podium place with Webber taking a hard earned fourth spot.
The DRS was used for the first time really in Malaysia and seemed to work quite well at certain points, i.e. getting people along side the other guy (Mark Webber used it a few times), but sometimes it seemed to spoil the show as the car using it just drove clean by – though you have to [...]

So testing for the 2011 season is done, the teams have their data and we have the times. There isn’t many surprises within the testing times though I would have expected more from McLaren – not another year spent catching up? If Red Bull stop throwing away points McLaren don’t have a chance. Ferrari should push them hard and expect Alonso to want that title.
Australia is an odd place, it doesn’t seem to be that indicative of the season and doesn’t always show the true pace of the cars. We also know that you can win by being clever here as Jenson Button has shown. Don’t expect the Red Bull to be off the pace though, or for the brakes to explode, they will be hard to beat.
The tyres will be the great unknown in Melbourne as there isn’t really anywhere to use the new rear wing or Drag reduction device, [...]

Love him or hate him Fernando Alonso is a great F1 driver, he soaked up tremendous amounts of pressure to secure a back-to-back victory for himself and Ferrari. He needed those points to give himself a hope in the title and now he’s only 9 points behind Mark Webber, that would be under two in last years system. Button is now 25pts off the pace but that’s still only a single race victory. With four races to go a DNF would probably be the end of the title chances unless everyone else suffers similarly. With races in Japan, Korea, Brazil and Abu Dhabi on the calendar and with some doubt surrounding the Korean GP there is simply no margin for error.
The race itself took part under floodlight which is the norm for Singapore, which into it’s third year didn’t seem to prove an issue to the drivers as they [...]

The hungaroring isn’t the most interesting track on the calendar, it’s narrow, twisty and boring, the drivers hardly have anywhere to overtake and it only seems to produce and interesting race when something untoward happens. Sundays race was no different really, the only incidents happening under the safety car, with Rosberg’s wheel going walkabout, Kubica and Sutil colliding in the pits and Vettel getting a penalty.
Webber avoided all the interesting goings on by staying out during the safety car and then using the Red Bull to the max to open up such a lead to Alonso that he could stop and rejoin in the lead – that’s some pace, the others have a lot to do. Vettel would have won the race had he not got a penalty under the safety car but in some ways that seems to sum up Vettel’s season so far.
The Ferrari’s capitalised on Vettel’s [...]

The German GP was a good one apart from a single corner that has overshadowed the whole weekend. Qualifying showed that the Ferraris are back on form and that it’s a six car race each time out. Hopefully that also means that the championship will stay tight at the front as Red Bull seem insistent on throwing away all the advantages that they get. McLaren also need Ferrari to take these points away from Red Bull at a point in the season when their challenge has faded a little. With the top few in title so close and all in competitive cars it should be a great run in.
The race itself was won (more on that later) in the first corner, Vettel was too concerned with Alonso that Massa drove clean past them both and with that distraction Alonso took second place too. The Ferraris also had the form of [...]

Silverstone is always a special race and with a new layout for 2010 is was always going to be a good race. Qualifying showed that the Red Bulls were the cars to beat as they locked out the front row despite all the controversy around the front wing that was put on Vettels car. The McLarens were slower comparatively than they have been recently but the Ferrari seemed quicker with Alonso taking third spot on the grid.
The race itself was good, Webber took the lead at the start and Hamilton touched Vettels tyre (or should that be Vettel touched Hamilton’s front wing?) the result was a puncture for Vettel and the end of his chances. Webber then dominated the race, not really giving anyone else a look in. Hamilton stayed in second being the fastest of the rest while Alonso who should have been challenging Hamilton for that position added [...]

Going home from Turkey with a 1-2 would have been McLaren’s dream result, no? Well it would have been had they not battled with each other for the lead 9 laps from the end, after the Red Bull incident it all seemed a little strange that they would be allowed to do so but neither driver showed the hot headed nature that ended Vettels race and they both carried on to finish but there were a few questions to be asked afterwards.
Both drivers had driven a good race up until that point and were heading towards 3rd and 4th, Hamilton had been fighting with the Red Bulls all the way and Button had been staying in touch and biding his time – this was the critical thing for the race as it meant he’d saved some more fuel over Hamilton – though that’s not in the most recent description of [...]

The Turkish GP promised some close racing after qualifying with a McLaren managing to split the Red Bull’s on the grid and the shows in practice but it was the Red Bulls that seemingly had everything in the bag, though the McLarens were by no means done when the Red Bulls got together. It was Lewis Hamilton’s first win of the season as Button continues to pick up solid points as did Mark Webber after the incident which saw him pit for a new front wing and still hold out for third ahead of Michael Schumacher.
The 1-2 for McLaren seemed to mask something between the drivers after the race, Button’s move for the lead 11 laps from the end showed that he’s not going to let Hamilton get away with anything though the somewhat lacklustre defence of that position a few corners later seemed a little odd. I wonder what [...]

Red Bull provided the text book display of how to go about winning an F1 race, the only thing that they didn’t manage to get right was both cars on the front of the grid. Mark Webber was in a class of his own for the entire race and it seemed that he had plenty of extra pace in the bag if the others started to push him. It seems that the championship this year may very well be between the two Red Bull drivers as their car looks unbeatable.
Fernando Alonso put on a rather impressive display of driving to go from the back of the grid to take 6th place and ensure limit the damage caused by his off in free practice on Saturday although I wonder what he could have done had he started from the front, yes he was helped by the safety cars but then he [...]

Mark Webber again shone in qualifying, he produced the fastest lap of the weekend so far in the dying seconds of qualifying to take pole position away form Robert Kubica who had looked untouchable out front.
It means that the Red Bull that had looked nowhere this weekend had managed to pull off pole and third in their quest to take the title before anyone catches them. McLaren will be disappointed their performance in qualifying as they didn’t manage to get near the front row of the grid. Jenson Button was complaining of being blocked but it didn’t look like they had the speed anyway.
Mercedes will be happy to see an improved performance from the car and will be hoping that they can put it to good use in the race tomorrow and score some solid points to ensure that they stay ahead of Renault in the championship. Renault themselves have [...]
