Testing continues in Spain

Williams will have done their stock price no harm with this test showing as Rubens Barrichello pulled out the fastest time in Jerez. The testing regime doesn’t really allow for a comparison, we all saw what Sauber did last year in the pre-season – and look where they are again.
The headline times don’t tell the whole story as the big teams seemed to set the most consistent fast times with Red Bull and Ferrari looking the strongest of those. McLaren may have to play catch up yet again, if only they’d make it easy for themselves at the start of the year.
Mercedes seem in all sorts of trouble with issues with the car and not seeming like they have the pace, though again it is only pre-season and in F1 terms there’s still a long way to go until that first race.

Vettel secures his first title with an amazing end to the season

Sebastian Vettel won the last race of the season at Abu Dhabi and in doing so took the F1 drivers title as both Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso floundered to seventh and eighth places. He becomes the youngest F1 world champion and seems to be set to build on that next year, if he can drop the mistakes then he will be very hard to unseat next year.
The race was somewhat disappointing after all of the build up and the Renaults made sure that Hamilton couldn’t challenge Vettel for the lead and that Alonso’s hopes faded as he couldn’t get past. The McLarens late season pace secured the end for Alonso and Webber as they needed the places, it will forever remain a mystery as to why McLaren didn’t have that pace for the last few races.

Full year report: McLaren

McLaren have had a solid if not exceptional season, they have won races and at the beginning showed pace that would have worried Red Bull. Their challenge faded though as they haven’t managed to keep up with the development at either Red Bull or Ferrari, which is unlike McLaren.
Jensen Button has proven that he isn’t the push over that so many people thought he would be and that Lewis Hamilton hasn’t had it all his own way, he has performed solidly all season though he has found himself in positions where he’s had to take the risky option – however it has paid off for him this year. He’ll be hoping that next year McLaren will build a car that is more predictable as unlike Lewis he  finds it hard to cope with an unstable car.
Lewis Hamilton’s season has shown flashes of brilliance with flashes of stupidity, without some of [...]

The drivers title will be decided on Sunday 14th of November

So the F1 circus heads to Abu Dhabi with four men who could win the title and an unbelievable number of mathematical possibilities. Alonso is the only man who can not finish the race and still win – though it’s unlikely that he would. Webber really must win to give himself the best chance to beat Alonso though he really needs the Spaniard to finish fourth or better to deny Vettel the chance of the title and thereby gaining an ally.
Qualifying will pose a unique challenge this weekend too given that a slip up by any of the top three drivers could mean an end to their championship hopes. It seems that Alonso has the advantage of experience in these matters but both Vettel and Webber have shown to be tough contenders this year. With the Red Bull car in such form it seems that the Ferrari man will [...]
