Full year report: Sauber

Sauber have had a good year given where they started from, the car wasn’t as fast as it could have been but Kobayashi makes sure that they always have a chance of points, had they not had the unreliability that they had at the start of the year they might have done more with it but still a solid year.
Kamui Kobayashi has displayed the excitement that we’ve come to expect from Japanese drivers and has scored points in races he had no business doing so. He could have benefited from some more help from the team in some races but he’s also shown he doesn’t need it. If he can curb the overly ambitious side of his driving he could be a force to be reckoned with.
Pedro de la Rosa didn’t last the whole year, I don’t think it did that badly overall he had some terrible bad luck early [...]

Nick Heidfeld moves to Mercedes reserve role

So without a home for 2010 Nick Heidfeld has given up hope of a race drive for 2010 and taken up the reserve driver role at Mercedes. I guess it is his best hope for a few races with a decent team.
With nowhere to go after Sauber signed Pedro de la Rosa he has settled for the reserve driver role, it’ll mean that he’s testing a good car and that he’s still in the F1 paddock at least but I’m not so sure he wouldn’t have been better off joining one of the new teams to keep himself on the track. I’m sure Campos would have jumped at the chance of having someone of his calibre driving for them. Having said that, they probably wouldn’t have paid him and it’s not like he’d have been competitive. At least he’d be there though.
With rumours circulating that Michael Schumacher doctors were about [...]

Sauber launch

Peter Sauber’s team unveiled their new car yesterday and though it got little press I think it’s a more exciting proposition than the Renault one. Peter Sauber describes himself as a reluctant owner but he’s always put in the effort with F1 and sold BMW a pretty handy team.
The new car looks kind of bare without any of the customary sponsorship but then the Brawn looked like that last year, it sports a higher nose than some of the other cars but retains the long fin of the McLaren. I will watch with keen interest how Sauber do this year though barring a huge surprise I don’t expect much from them really.
With Kamui Kobayashi and Pedro de la Rosa driving for them this season they really do have the experience and the excitement though I’m not sure how de la Rosa got the nod ahead of Nick Heidfeld but [...]

Renault with a Russian and new colours

Renault have now launched their car and announced the driver to partner Robert Kubica. Vitaly Petrov will pilot the second Renault for 2010, he makes history as the first Russian to enter F1, no mention of the money he could bring though.
The new Renault doesn’t look as sharp as the McLaren or the Ferrari but the 2005/6 cars didn’t either and look what they did. I love the new colour scheme though it does remind me somewhat of Eddie Jordan’s team. It will look good on track, and if their design team has managed to stay insulated from all the happenings at the team over the past 12 months they might produce something – I guess we’ll have to wait until Bahrain to see if they have managed it.
Vitaly Petrov seems an odd choice as the second driver but I guess they couldn’t have done worse than Romain Grosjean. He [...]
