No Bahrain? Australia to start? What will Ferrari and Nico Rosberg do?

With the political unrest currently in the Middle East spreading into Bahrain over the past week the world of F1 seems set to end up making some sort of political statement. They have a scheduled test and then the first GP of the year both set to happen in the next month in a country that is beginning to show the same dissatisfaction as other Middle Eastern countries and bar Iran they have succumbed to the pressure and had to do something.
F1 will want to keep it’s hands clean in the political sphere to avoid harming and future deals with either the current or any future power holders in the country but without a swift end to the protests it can’t justify aligning itself with any faction that would be the case were the GP to be held. I suspect that the situation will have calmed down for the race [...]

Full year report: Mercedes

Mercedes bought the Brawn team and convinced Michael Schumacher to return to F1 but have achieved little else. They have been the fourth best team on the grid for most of the season and they’ll be disappointed by that. Ross Brawn will be pushing hard to improve things for next year but it remains to be seen whether they can build something that can challenge the other teams. They seem to have got bogged down in the midfield to many times this year, whether that is because the car is hard to use in passing or whether it is just a lack of pace we’ll never know.
Nico Rosberg has had an impressive season, he has continually bettered Michael Schumacher and has impressed the team. That said he hasn’t set the world on fire, but that could be the car too. He needs to beat Schumacher in 2011 too if [...]

Webber triumphs in Hungary as Vettel loses his cool, again

The hungaroring isn’t the most interesting track on the calendar, it’s narrow, twisty and boring, the drivers hardly have anywhere to overtake and it only seems to produce and interesting race when something untoward happens. Sundays race was no different really, the only incidents happening under the safety car, with Rosberg’s wheel going walkabout, Kubica and Sutil colliding in the pits and Vettel getting a penalty.
Webber avoided all the interesting goings on by staying out during the safety car and then using the Red Bull to the max to open up such a lead to Alonso that he could stop and rejoin in the lead – that’s some pace, the others have a lot to do. Vettel would have won the race had he not got a penalty under the safety car but in some ways that seems to sum up Vettel’s season so far.
The Ferrari’s capitalised on Vettel’s [...]

Schumacher, Alonso and the punishment

With Schumacher taking a penalty for overtaking under the safety car and Mercedes not appealing that means that Schumacher will go down in the record books as being beaten by Rosberg again – not something that he’s going to enjoy making a habit of. It seems that everyone other than Ferrari thought you could race to the line, even the commentators but then everyone knows which team has the ear of the stewards.
The punishment at first seems fair, a 20sec penalty, but when it’s taken in the context of a safety car finish it’s clear that it’s about as damaging as disqualification as all the cars will be finished. Some have talked about swapping the cars back as punishment but a) that’s not in the rule book, and b) that doesn’t really punish anyone. It seems that the 20s penalty was the lightest reprimand that they could hand out – [...]
