The fourth day in Jerez with Lewis Hamilton and McLaren the stars

The fourth day of the F1 pre season testing in Jerez has finished with Lewis Hamilton and McLaren top of the timesheets. The damp but not wet conditions held for the day as most of the teams got the chance to put in some proper dry runs at the Spainish circuit and therefore some more comparable times.
Mercedes had ups and downs though with stopping on track it wasn’t the best day for them even if they did manage to claim fifth spot in the timings. They seem to be showing strong form overall and that must give Michael Schumacher confidence that hes going to have a capable car come the first race of the season.
Williams also had a strong day finishing with third spot in the timings, Rubens Barrichello seems to have the edge on the young Nico Hulkenberg already which is good for him, it’d be great for them to [...]

The third day in Jerez, Jaime Alguersuari puts Toro Rosso fastest

The third day of testing at Jerez is now over and the dust on track settled, even with some of the eyes in F1 on the Lotus launch in london the track was no less busy today.
With the action on track coming from Jaime Alguersuari and Toro Rosso who got in a fast lap before the weather turned against the teams later on and BMW Sauber who remain fast taking the second slot behind the Italian team. Virgin suffered again as their parts didn’t reach the circuit in time to get any dry running.
Red Bull improved their times from the other day with Sebastien Vettel at the wheel and so don’t it doesn’t look quite as bad. The big teams of Ferrari and McLaren haven’t made much impression yet on this test but that more than likely means they are focusing on more development and analysis work such as tyre [...]

Nick Heidfeld moves to Mercedes reserve role

So without a home for 2010 Nick Heidfeld has given up hope of a race drive for 2010 and taken up the reserve driver role at Mercedes. I guess it is his best hope for a few races with a decent team.
With nowhere to go after Sauber signed Pedro de la Rosa he has settled for the reserve driver role, it’ll mean that he’s testing a good car and that he’s still in the F1 paddock at least but I’m not so sure he wouldn’t have been better off joining one of the new teams to keep himself on the track. I’m sure Campos would have jumped at the chance of having someone of his calibre driving for them. Having said that, they probably wouldn’t have paid him and it’s not like he’d have been competitive. At least he’d be there though.
With rumours circulating that Michael Schumacher doctors were about [...]

The surprising speed of Sauber and de la Rosa

This weeks F1 testing has shown that the Sauber C29 is no slouch, I said that they might just pull something out of the bag but I wasn’t expecting that. Sauber firmly planted themselves in second place for all three days.
