With Schumacher taking a penalty for overtaking under the safety car and Mercedes not appealing that means that Schumacher will go down in the record books as being beaten by Rosberg again &#8211; not something that he&#8217;s going to enjoy making a habit of. It seems that everyone other than Ferrari thought you could race to the line, even the commentators but then everyone knows which team has the ear of the stewards.
The punishment at first seems fair, a 20sec penalty, but when it&#8217;s taken in the context of a safety car finish it&#8217;s clear that it&#8217;s about as damaging as disqualification as all the cars will be finished. Some have talked about swapping the cars back as punishment but a) that&#8217;s not in the rule book, and b) that doesn&#8217;t really punish anyone. The first two Formula 1 pre-season tests seem have included more long runs than in previous years, but why? I&#8217;d say that it&#8217;s down to the refueling rule changes for the 2010 season as well as some of the technical regulations around the size of the tyres.
Last year with the re-introduction of slick tyres the teams kept the same size tyres that they had in the grooved days this meant that proportionally the front tyres gained more grip. This was because both front and rear had four grooves that were now part of the contact patch, with the rear tyre being wider it meant that the four grooves worth of grip supplied was less in percentage terms than returning the four grooves to the front. Another of the new rules for 2010 is that the teams can&#8217;t use the spinners that became popular in the last couple of years. These used to smooth the airflow over the wheels and ensure they caused minimal turbulence and drag. It also used to improve rear downforce and cooling.
These little gadgets had many benefits to the teams so it&#8217;s hard to see that they would have abandoned them without a fight but then the whole Alonso debacle where the spinner wasn&#8217;t fitted correctly and eventually tore the wheel free may have softened them up on that one. With the teams fighting for every inch I&#8217;ll be interested to see what the teams can do to claw back the positive sides to these devices.

The 2010 regulations have changed so that refueling during the race is banned. This means that the teams don&#8217;t have to deal with the dodgy fuel rigs and that the pit lane will be a safer place. Does it improve the racing though?
I&#8217;m on the same side as Martin Brundle and Bernie Eccelstone here, I think this rule is bad for the sport. The tactics that came out of refueling made some grand prix and didn&#8217;t ruin the others. It made more overtaking opportunities where light cars caught heavier ones and cars that were out of place had to overtake.
I guess that there will still be pit stops for tyres and that the teams will have to stop to change them but it&#8217;s not the same, all pit stops will now be the same length &#8211; no more short fills for position. It seems that putting the fuel in or [...]]]></description>

Williams took the covers off their new car today during the first F1 test of the year, with drivers Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg set to drive the car they have experience and promise and they should have the experience as a team to cope with all the rule changes and make the best out of them.
The new car retains the colours of previous years and seems to fit snugly in the mould of the 2010 cars with a higher nose and an elongated wheel base that accommodates the fuel tank.
In Rubens who&#8217;s testing the car they have got one of the most consistent drivers on the grid and he&#8217;ll serve them well this season, I have a feeling that they will bring home more results than they did last year as Nico Hulkenberg had a habit of getting results too.

It seems that there is going to be another new rule for 2010, that the top ten drivers will have to start the race on the same tyres that they qualified in. At first it seems that it will make the race strategy even more different from last year, but will it?
The drivers will more likely use the softer compound for qualifying and therefore want to stop sooner in the race to get rid of them, so we&#8217;ll just have the short first stints that we&#8217;ve seen in the past. It will be a boon for any car/driver that can keep the harder compound on throughout qualifying though so perhaps we&#8217;ll see more upsets.
This rule sounds like an odd addition but I guess it&#8217;s all about trying to spice up the action and I can see how this would put drivers out of position if they go for race day [...]]]></description>
