Times and more from Jerez

Today’s action on track was in better conditions than yesterday but it was still damp at the Spainish circuit. Out of the four things that we wanted to see we got two of them Kobayashi took the Sauber all the way to the top and Button put the McLaren ahead of the Mercedes, Red Bull however didn’t manage to drag themselves off the bottom of the established teams and though Virgin did close the gap it’s still quite some difference.
A lot of the teams seem to be testing long runs with the high fuel loads that they are going to need to run, it’ll now only be the later stages of the race that they will have light fuel loads on board for so heavier cars are going to be the norm and the teams need to make sure that they can run heavy – and fast.
Tyre evaluation will also [...]

Testing times in Jerez, they really are…

Todays test in Jerez involved all of the current F1 teams along with the first new team to show it’s colours – Virgin Racing. With last weeks test throwing up some surprises we’d expect this weeks one to be even more exciting.
The test didn’t disappoint – apart from the weather – there’s not that much comparison to do between the times as all the cars would have been trying out different setups and tyres to see where the wet/inter cut off is but seeing a Mercedes with Nico Rosberg firmly at the top might be a little ominous. Fernando Alonso would have been disappointed not to be faster and Sauber with Kamui Kobayashi stayed just below the Ferrari it’s just that time that meant fifth place.
McLaren and Jenson Button still don’t seem to be able to get it together with the sixth fastest time but Sebastien Buemi (Toro Rosso) and [...]

Testing day two – more red paint please

With Michael Schumacher absent from the test another former world champion in the form of Lewis Hamilton took to the track in his first laps of the McLaren, he fared better than Gary Paffett by getting the McLaren ahead of the Mercedes but didn’t impress on the Ferrari dominance of the test so far, or the Sauber’s second place.
Sauber seem to have amazing pace considering what has happened to them over the last few months, perhaps we are going to see another Brawn moment? And it was the inexperienced Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi at the wheel today so it seems it’s not all down to a testers handiwork – I have to admit I’m already becoming a fan.
The Ferrari is continuing to impress with it’s form and it seems that there are rumours of more downforce from a b-spec diffuser that is being rushed through development at the factory, who knows [...]

Toro Rosso need some wings

Toro Rosso seem to get lost on the F1 grid as they are always playing second fiddle to Red Bull, they don’t have as good a car, or drivers and last year they didn’t seem to pull off any surprises, unlike previous years.
With another season looming they have actually designed their own car this year rather than relying on Red Bull hand-me-downs and with Ferrari engines they might actually bother some people though their aim must be to stay ahead of the new guys.
With Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi confirmed for 2010 they don’t exactly have a stellar line up though I guess they do have consistency. I don’t think that either of these guys showed the promise that Liuzzi did but then what do I know.
So what should we expect from these guys next year? Well I think more of the same really. I have heard that Red [...]
