Yes I know that Sebastien Vettel won again but it wasn’t a walk in the park, and Lewis Hamilton nearly had him. But the race as a whole was good, Barcelona doesn’t always produce the best racing because the teams know the track so well – I guess it’s not as bad these days with the limited testing but still. It wasn’t even the DRS that helped, I don’t think it was massively down to the tyres either, though they clearly have an impact especially if this article about the Red Bull not being able to use all of it’s downforce is true.
Down the field there were battles between drivers all over though I think some of these were due to the tyres. This part of the racing seems to be settling down over time as people become used to the differential in pace and are running much more similar [...]

The Malaysian GP was full of overtaking, pit stops, accidents, etc… but is was serene for Vettel at the front as he waltzed off to his second victory and a 24pt lead in the championship. Jenson Button who described his own race as “confusing” finished up in second as he put his McLaren where it needed to be and kept hold of his tyres for long enough to make it stick. Heidfeld confirmed the pace of the Renault as he took the last podium place with Webber taking a hard earned fourth spot.
The DRS was used for the first time really in Malaysia and seemed to work quite well at certain points, i.e. getting people along side the other guy (Mark Webber used it a few times), but sometimes it seemed to spoil the show as the car using it just drove clean by – though you have to [...]

With a decent start to the season in Australia behind us the F1 circus moves to Malaysia. The Red Bull cars look unstoppable and with Martin Whitmarsh dampening hopes of McLaren staying in touch does this leave the fighting for third place as the best hope for anyone but Sebastien Vettel or Mark Webber?
The teams will come to Sepang and regard it as the first proper racing track – Australia is a street circuit and as such doesn’t have the same characteristics as a racing circuit. Sepang should let the DRS actually work and should show some more of the aero effects from the new rules.
Ferrari and McLaren will be hoping that they can get on terms with Red Bull and Mercedes will be hoping that they can figure out how to use their car. The tyres will play an important role and all the teams will be keen to [...]

Melbourne took on the task of staging the first GP of the 2011 season and did a pretty good job. Sure it’s a street circuit and doesn’t show up some of the real pace of the cars, and the new DRS systems couldn’t be used to their full potential but it was a good, interesting, and lively start to the year. I’m not sure that Bahrain would have offered the same experience.
So Vettel took his first win of the year and started his title defence in the best way possible, Hamilton showed that he’s not going to let Vettel get away if he can help it and Alonso showed that he is top dog at Ferrari. Button, Webber and Massa all had weekends that they would rather have gone differently but they all scored points which was important last year so they shouldn’t be as downhearted as guys like Kobayahsi [...]

Three tests down and the last about to start before the 2011 season kicks off two weeks late in Melbourne after the cancellation postponement of the Bahrain GP.
2011 looks to be a stellar season in F1 – did I just use the word ’stellar’? – with Red Bull continuing their position as the team to beat and Ferrari showing good form. McLaren will have a fast car too, they always do and they have a well earned reputation for improving their car throughout the season.
The tyres are likely to play a key role this year too with the Pirellis not lasting as long during testing as last years Bridgestones. It will be an interesting year as during the tyre war a few years back it took teams nearly a whole season to effectively make the switch from one supplier, now all the teams are doing it together but will that [...]

So 2011 won’t only include a new tyre supplier, it will have new technical regulations because of the F-duct. McLaren’s innovation of the F-duct seems to have caught a lot of the other teams on the back foot and has given them a huge advantage in terms of development time this year and from the results it looks like they’ve put it to good use. This new device although banned for next year is surely behind the new regulation that the drivers will be able to adjust the top flap of the rear wing.
With a similar effect to the F-duct a movable rear wing will effectively be a boost button on long straights and will enable the cars to run with more down-force at places like Canada and Silverstone. It will come down to who can design the best system but I’m not sure that I like the whole idea. [...]

Jenson Button became the first driver in 2010 to win for a second time as he beat Lewis Hamilton home for a McLaren 1-2. Button stayed near the sharp end at the start and then stayed out on slicks when most of the other top drivers pitted for intermediates, this put him out front with Nico Rosberg, as Rosberg started to struggle Button closed up and took the lead he wouldn’t surrender for the rest of the race. As the drivers on inters started to put the times in that would catch the leaders their tyres went and they had to pit again and so those at the front enjoyed about a 50s lead.
With the race order set for a while those who had stopped started to carve their way through the middle order, Lewis Hamilton showed his skill at overtaking during this phase and by the time the second [...]

The Chinese GP has had it’s moments over the past few years but apart from those it hasn’t really produced classic races, this year may be different with so many cars fighting over the top spot and with the track being quite different from the other we’ve had so far we might see a different winner.
The Ferrari’s will want to improve their performance and get back to the front, along with the rest of the teams they will bring upgrades to this circuit so we might see some change in the ordering throughout the field. Red Bull with turn up full of confidence having scored a 1-2 in Malaysia and having won this race last year. The McLarens will arrive hoping that they can get back on terms with the others as they don’t quite seem to have had the pace so far this year. Mercedes will be hoping that [...]

In Australia Jenson Button made a very brave tyre call that effectively won him the race, he made it work but it gave him the opportunity to win. A week later and he sat on the grid with the softer option tyres whilst everyone around him was on the harder compound – and finished the race in 8th place 2 behind Lewis Hamilton who’d started behind him on the harder tyres.
Jenson’s race didn’t get off to a flying start as he found himself behind the Ferrari’s, a stop on lap 8 put him on the harder tyres and on a clear part of the track which he used to his advantage to put in some fast times which were out of sync with his rivals and in the process he jumped most of them, but, he’s now two thirds of the way into the race on the hard tyres which [...]

Jenson Button gave a masterclass to the other drivers, he was the bravest man on the tyres and his smooth style meant that he could finish the race on the same tyres that that he drove 4/5ths of the race on. While all the other drivers were fighting and struggling on the worn tyres Jenson Button serenely drove on at the front on his way to his first victory at McLaren.
The race itself was a much better show than in Bahrain and it seems clear that it would have been even if there hadn’t been the rain at the start. The track lends itself more to overtaking than Bahrain though Michael Schumacher will probably disagree given the amount of time that he spent behind Jaime Alguersuari.
The Red Bulls suffered from mechanical failure again as Sebastien Vettel had a brake failure on his way to retirement and Mark Webber misjudged a [...]
