Australia provides an appetizer for the 2011 F1 season

Melbourne took on the task of staging the first GP of the 2011 season and did a pretty good job. Sure it’s a street circuit and doesn’t show up some of the real pace of the cars, and the new DRS systems couldn’t be used to their full potential but it was a good, interesting, and lively start to the year. I’m not sure that Bahrain would have offered the same experience.
So Vettel took his first win of the year and started his title defence in the best way possible, Hamilton showed that he’s not going to let Vettel get away if he can help it and Alonso showed that he is top dog at Ferrari. Button, Webber and Massa all had weekends that they would rather have gone differently but they all scored points which was important last year so they shouldn’t be as downhearted as guys like Kobayahsi [...]

Full year report: Renault

Renault have flattered to deceive all year, in practice they are fast, Robert  sometimes even gets them near the front in qualifying but the never seem to be able to convert in into race pace. Vitaly Petrov hasn’t exactly excelled in the other car and they don’t seem to have had the development regime of the other teams.
Robert Kubica has been the star of the Renault show and if there were places at one of the top teams he would be heading there, but as there isn’t he’ll be at Renault next year plugging away trying to ensure that he stays on peoples radar, he might even get a podium.
Vitaly Petrov hasn’t impressed all year, he has had accident after incident and hasn’t been consistent in any way. If he hadn’t paid for his drive I doubt he’d still be racing, Flavio would have had him out races ago.
Renault need [...]

McLaren falter and Red Bull charge onwards in Japan

With the five title contenders only 25pts or a race win apart the championship looked incredibly close going into the race. Vettel’s victory and the failure of either McLaren driver to even look like they could get on the podium unless one of the other guys has a problem means that the championship looks less open going to Korea.
If Red Bull don’t have an issue at the next race, and I probably mean a double DNF here then the McLaren guys are out of the title race now, Alonso is still in there but it’s looking more and more like Red Bull have this year in the bag.
Kobayashi had a fantastic race for Sauber and was the only man to really drive past people, if the tactical guys at Sauber had got their act together then he may well have finished further up the field than he did. If more [...]

Team play in turkey for Hamilton and Button

The Turkish GP promised some close racing after qualifying with a McLaren managing to split the Red Bull’s on the grid and the shows in practice but it was the Red Bulls that seemingly had everything in the bag, though the McLarens were by no means done when the Red Bulls got together. It was Lewis Hamilton’s first win of the season as Button continues to pick up solid points as did Mark Webber after the incident which saw him pit for a new front wing and still hold out for third ahead of Michael Schumacher.
The 1-2 for McLaren seemed to mask something between the drivers after the race, Button’s move for the lead 11 laps from the end showed that he’s not going to let Hamilton get away with anything though the somewhat lacklustre defence of that position a few corners later seemed a little odd. I wonder what [...]
