Sebastien Vettel treated everyone to an F1 master class from Saturday morning onwards, despite the fact that he wrecked his car in Friday practice, he set the fastest time in morning practice, was so confident of pole that he didn’t do a second run in qualifying, and won the race without ever looking like anyone could beat him, I’m sure he’ll be pissed that Mark Webber got the fastest lap.
Alonso put in an amazing performance to finish third with the Ferrari and McLaren have some thinking to do going to Barcelona, as have Mercedes who again couldn’t hold it together during the race despite holding second after the first lap. It was a race full of disappointment for most of the grid really, Williams will wonder what they are doing wrong as the best they could manage was 15th and Felipe Massa will wonder how he managed to finish outside [...]

So F1 is off to Turkey to see if McLaren can still chase down the Red Bulls, will the Ferrari have found what was wrong with their car and improved – Was it just Alonso’s head adding drag to the car? Have Mercedes managed to get to the bottom of the tyre issues? Will Williams actually get going at all this year?
We’ve had a great start to the season, exciting races, close finishes – and some controversy on the track. All we need now is for the title race to close up and we’ll be on for a eye popping year in F1. It could however all go horribly wrong, Vettel could streak out into the lead, McLaren could falter and we could all be watching Mercedes and Sauber fight over 6th to 10th.
Turkey normally has an exciting race, turn 8 in particular takes no prisoners and punishes bad aero. [...]

What a weekend for Lewis Hamilton, fast in practice, third in qualifying, then a storming race where he showed why he’s a world champion. Jenson Button had no answer and neither did Sebastien Vettel, Lewis took the race win, he wasn’t gifted it, he didn’t have the ultimate fastest car and he had to pass people to win. It was another busy race but it already seems that the new rules are sinking in and if they provide racing like that then it can only be a positive thing.
Special mention must go out to Nico Rosberg who did a fantastic job and led the race for a good few laps, and to Felipe Massa as his form improves and he finishes ahead of Alonso again. The Toro Rossos did well in qualifying too, we’ve still yet to see the form of the new teams as they aren’t anywhere near the [...]

So testing for the 2011 season is done, the teams have their data and we have the times. There isn’t many surprises within the testing times though I would have expected more from McLaren – not another year spent catching up? If Red Bull stop throwing away points McLaren don’t have a chance. Ferrari should push them hard and expect Alonso to want that title.
Australia is an odd place, it doesn’t seem to be that indicative of the season and doesn’t always show the true pace of the cars. We also know that you can win by being clever here as Jenson Button has shown. Don’t expect the Red Bull to be off the pace though, or for the brakes to explode, they will be hard to beat.
The tyres will be the great unknown in Melbourne as there isn’t really anywhere to use the new rear wing or Drag reduction device, [...]

Williams will have done their stock price no harm with this test showing as Rubens Barrichello pulled out the fastest time in Jerez. The testing regime doesn’t really allow for a comparison, we all saw what Sauber did last year in the pre-season – and look where they are again.
The headline times don’t tell the whole story as the big teams seemed to set the most consistent fast times with Red Bull and Ferrari looking the strongest of those. McLaren may have to play catch up yet again, if only they’d make it easy for themselves at the start of the year.
Mercedes seem in all sorts of trouble with issues with the car and not seeming like they have the pace, though again it is only pre-season and in F1 terms there’s still a long way to go until that first race.
Renault continue to evaluate drivers to replace Kubica who [...]

2010 Constructors champions Red Bull Racing looks set to agree a deal with Audi to use their engines in Formula 1 in 2013. This follows months of speculation in which the German manufacturer was also linked to Williams F1.
Road car innovation
Audi’s parent company VW is believed to have been enticed to finally enter F1 following moves by the sports governing body, the FIA, to make the sport both more environmentally friendly and road car relevant. These two things are not mutually exclusive with road car companies becoming increasingly preoccupied with reducing the fuel consumption of their vehicles in light of ever increasing fuel prices. Many of the sports key players realised that the sports negligence to address these issues in the past couple of years had played a big part in the withdrawal of key players BMW, Honda and Toyota.
It was therefore announced that engines would be downsized from the [...]

Williams have had a lacklustre season, they haven’t really threatened other than when the track is damp, and even then not the front. Barrichello has hauled the car into the points on more occasions than it deserved and Hulkenberg has started to pick up the places too but ultimately a lack of pace on long runs has meant that they fade on a Sunday even when they have done well in qualifying.
Rubens Barrichello is the most experienced guy in F1 and he has shown it this year with some decent races finishes and the fact that Williams have bee able to develop the car at such a pace. It will be ashame if he bows out of F1 without a fanfare, but I can’t see why he would.
Nico Hulkenberg had a lot to prove coming into this season, the field is a wash with young Germans and he hasn’t done [...]

The Mexican grand prix in 1991 was the last time that a Porsche powered F1 car raced. In the hands of Michele Alboreto and Alex Caffi, the Footwork Porsche cars failed to qualify for most races and when they did make the start the cars wouldn’t last long before suffering reliability gremlins. It was an unfitting end to the German manufacturer tenure in the sport, with them having won three world championships in the 1980s with Mclaren. However, Porsche may be about to put all of this right.
The appeal of F1
Formula One is still massively popular, with Formula One Management suggesting that a global audience of about 600 million people see at least some F1 action every single year. It’s appeal is universal and it has made global megastars out of the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. Nigel Mansell can still make money from his association [...]

Korea was always going to be an odd event, the track wasn’t finished, the teams knew nothing about the surface and it had the specter of rain. What rain it was too, apart from causing the race start to be delayed an hour it meant that no one out there was confident – apart it seemed from Lewis Hamilton. Webber slipped in the conditions and Vettel’s car let him down again as Alonso was left to pick up the pieces and take a lead in the drivers championship.
The two McLaren drivers have almost ruled themselves out of the hunt now with fourth and twelfth and given the pace of their car which leaves the title race to Webber, Vettel, and Alonso. With Brazil and Abu Dhabi to come (both won by Red Bull last year) Webber must being feeling confident, though in the past Ferrari have held the upper hand [...]

Love him or hate him Fernando Alonso is a great F1 driver, he soaked up tremendous amounts of pressure to secure a back-to-back victory for himself and Ferrari. He needed those points to give himself a hope in the title and now he’s only 9 points behind Mark Webber, that would be under two in last years system. Button is now 25pts off the pace but that’s still only a single race victory. With four races to go a DNF would probably be the end of the title chances unless everyone else suffers similarly. With races in Japan, Korea, Brazil and Abu Dhabi on the calendar and with some doubt surrounding the Korean GP there is simply no margin for error.
The race itself took part under floodlight which is the norm for Singapore, which into it’s third year didn’t seem to prove an issue to the drivers as they [...]
